Celebrating National Mobility Awareness Month 2025: Darryl Galmore’s Journey

May is National Mobility Awareness Month. It is a time to highlight the importance of mobility access, adaptive technology, and the personal journeys of those reclaiming their independence- especially starting in St. Louis. For Darryl Galmore, mobility means more than movement—it means freedom. His story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when people have the tools and community to keep moving forward.
A Friday That Changed Everything
One Friday after work, Darryl was driving home while talking with his wife on the phone. The traffic light turned green, but he quickly realized his right foot wouldn’t press the gas. Feeling weak, he noticed he was having stroke symptoms, so he acted fast. He grabbed his left leg to put on the gas pedal and sped off seeking help! “The car took off like a rocket- vrooooom!” he recalls. Next, he suffered a few desperate stops for aid that ended in him collapsing in his driveway just as police, paramedics, and his wife arrived.
Introduction to Independence
During rehabilitation at SSM Day Health, staff suggested a tour of Paraquad’s Orthwein Center. The 12,000‑square‑foot adaptive gym immediately felt different. Every piece of equipment was designed so members could work out on their own terms. “I like being able to do the machines by myself,” Darryl says. With that independence as motivation, he’s committed to visiting three times a week—and often brings a family member along for extra support.
Never Looking Back
Ever since that life-changing Friday, Darryl has never looked back! What started as a rehabilitation journey has turned into a path towards reclaiming his strength and independence. When he first arrived at the Orthwein Center, he was using a wheelchair. But with time, persistence, and the right guidance, he gradually progressed to walking again. “These people here keep me going every day,” Darryl says, reflecting on the encouragement and consistency he’s found in both staff and fellow members.
Home Away From Home
The gym isn’t just part of his routine-it’s a second home. “I love it, love it, love it here,” he says with a smile. Paraquad’s mission to champion equity and independence for people with disabilities shines in Darryl’s story. After touring in 2022, he chose to keep showing up and move forward in his wellness journey. For Darryl, Paraquad isn’t just about exercise. It’s about belonging, progress, and proving to himself that independence is always within reach!
