Proposed Medicaid Cuts

United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

The United States Senate is debating a reconciliation budget bill that would cut $800 billion from Medicaid over the next ten years. Further, the bill requires eligibility re-checks every six months, instead of once a year, and imposes short sighted work requirements adding needless red tape and hardship to recipients. Many people could lose Medicaid even though they still qualify, simply because of missed paperwork or the new confusing requirements. These cuts will make it harder for people with disabilities to get needed services outside of institutions and undermine the Independent Living movement’s goal of equality and autonomy for people with disabilities.
