The Benefits of Paraquad’s Peer Mentoring Program

Paraquad’s peer mentoring program is a tool to empower people with disabilities to explore the possibilities after a life-changing circumstance. Participants are matched with mentors who share similar disabilities.

The benefits of peer mentoring go beyond a simple conversation — the connection opens the door to learning from one another’s personal experiences. We invite you to discover how the relationships we create in our peer mentorship program benefits all participants.

Adapting to Disability

One of the primary benefits of peer mentorship is the exchange of lived experiences. We partner participants with mentors who have a similar injury or disability, or who have faced similar life experiences. Our mentors receive comprehensive training and share valuable insights on how to live well with a disability.

Through consistent one-on-one interactions, participants find direction while adapting to their disability or going through a difficult personal transition. Mentors often share tactics for everything from building self-confidence to managing day-to-day care.

Building Community

One of the biggest benefits of peer mentoring programs is a sense of community. People with disabilities have historically been excluded from social circles, educational opportunities and employment. The peer mentoring program is a unique community where all are welcome.

By bringing together people with similar circumstances, peer mentoring increases social engagement and promotes positive social attitudes. The peer mentor program provides a safe space to engage with others, celebrate achievements and develop long-lasting relationships.

Integrating into Society

Living with a disability may sometimes be challenging. Whether struggling to secure a job or managing personal care, someone else has likely experienced a similar situation. Our peer mentors enhance independence by providing coping strategies and resources when needed.

One of the key benefits of our peer mentoring program is promoting positive life outcomes. A mentor may connect participants to other Paraquad services, such as:
