Independent Living
Adult Program

Paraquad’s Independent Living Skills Training is a personalized program that gives participants the opportunity to identify adaptive living skills and resources that will help them live more independently.

Why is independent living so important?

Independent living is something that we cannot take for granted. It is the ability to participate in and contribute to the communities around us. Independent living boils down to empowerment. People with disabilities have the ability to make decisions for themselves — whether that be about their healthcare, employment, recreational activities and beyond.

What can ILAP assist you with?

Our ILAP team can assist you with a variety of factors in independent living, such as finding affordable housing, navigating accessible transportation services and connecting you with valuable community resources.

Participants identify their independent living goals and are responsible for working toward them. Our independent living specialists provide resources, training and encouragement to achieve the goal, but the participant always maintains control.

Participants work one-on-one with independent living specialists to set independent living goals such as:

  • Finding affordable and accessible housing

  • Navigating vocational rehabilitation and other community agencies

  • Participating in community recreation

  • Learning adaptive living skills after a new disability

  • Socialization and making friends

  • Discovering community resources

  • Problem-solving

  • Personal relationships and sexuality

  • Money management and budgeting

  • Healthcare

  • Planning meals and shopping

  • Safety and emergency planning

  • Personal care and hygiene

  • Navigating and qualifying for accessible transportation services such as Call-a-Ride
