A Guide to Independent and Assisted Living for People with Disabilities

People with disabilities often require different levels of support in their day-to-day lives. Some may need round-the-clock assistance, while others may only need occasional help with intensive activities. The choice between community living and Missouri consumer-directed services depends on care needs, budget and personal preferences.

We’re here to help you identify what living situation works best for you or your loved one — read on for Paraquad’s guide to independent and assisted living options for people with disabilities.

Assisted Living Communities

An assisted living community is a great option for seniors and adults with disabilities in need of more attentive medical or personal care. Residents typically live in a private apartment surrounded by a community of other residents. Nurses and care specialists assist with daily tasks, such as bathing, dressing and fall prevention.

Comprehensive services are available to residents, including meal preparation, transportation and an organized social calendar. Full-time health care is usually available for residents. Similar to Missouri consumer-directed services, assisted living communities offer a supportive environment that allows residents to feel independent while receiving hands-on care.

However, you may not want to pursue this option if you or your loved one is capable of living independently. Assisted living for people with disabilities is typically more expensive — in 2021, the average monthly cost of an assisted living community in Missouri was $3,000.

Independent Living Communities

Independent living communities are ideal for seniors and adults with disabilities who can accomplish daily tasks alone but may need assistance with high-maintenance activities.

These communities take some responsibilities off your plate. Community staff often handle chores like lawn care, laundry, housekeeping and home repairs. Beyond that, these communities keep health and wellness services periodically accessible.

With social events planned, these communities benefit people looking for stronger community connections. While more convenient, living costs tend to be more than the average apartment — in Missouri, independent living communities cost an average of $2,831 a month

In-Home Care

Some seniors or people with disabilities may prefer the privacy and comfort of their own homes but still need support with daily activities. Like assisted living for people with disabilities, in-home care provides hands-on personal and medical support. Home health aides handle everything from hygiene and meal preparation to medication administration and management.

Costs may vary depending on the amount of care required. In-home care is often not ideal if you or your loved one needs round-the-clock care — without insurance, it may be significantly more expensive than other living options. On average, a home health aide costs $4,767 a month in Missouri.

However, if you or your loved one is eligible for Medicaid, the Missouri consumer-directed services program is a great way to guide care. This program is good for people with disabilities who understand their needs most and prefer to be in charge of their own care.

Participants have the ability to choose their personal care attendant. They could be a friend, family member or certified professional sourced from Paraquad’s registry. We work as an intermediary between participants and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services — guiding care planning, outlining personal preferences and selecting a personal care attendant.
