Weigh in on the Steinberg Ice Skating Rink Redesign

Since 1957, the Steinberg Pavilion and Rink has been a popular St. Louis attraction for visitors and residents looking to create winter memories through skating. Forest Park Forever and the City of St. Louis are partnering to transform the complex into an all-season destination. Before they finalize the plans and build the new-and-improved complex, the project team has asked for input to make the Steinberg ice skating rink more welcoming to all.

The Proposed Plan

Steinberg Reimagined will be the same size, with environmentally-conscious equipment. The proposed improvements will maximize the pavilion for various structured and unstructured activities throughout the year.

The skate change areas will be reimagined as a flexible programming space. The proposed design includes a warming room, padded seats, new restrooms and an expanded equipment rental area. Rentable party and office rooms will also be available on the first floor, with direct outdoor access. The rinkside cafe will soon offer more grab-n-go refreshments, such as nachos, sandwiches and adult beverages.

Notably, a second floor will be added on top of the existing Steinberg Pavillion. This new floor will include a restaurant, bar, outdoor terrace and community living room. This addition to the St. Louis attraction will provide more space for games, work and community connections.

On the northern side of the Steinberg ice skating rink, an interactive water feature will be added with the hope of drawing more people to the rink over the summer. In the winter months, the water feature will convert into a warming area with fire pits.

The Request for Input

Since 2021, Forest Park Forever has been asking the community for input on the upcoming project. So far, over 4,200 people have provided feedback on programming, activities and amenities they would like to see throughout the year. The project team adjusted the initial concepts to fill community needs — now, a new survey is open to help them improve as they push forward.

This survey could be an opportunity to suggest ideas that may promote accessibility at the Steinberg ice skating rink for people who have disabilities. For example, you may have suggestions related to:

  • More sensory-friendly activities

  • Designing easily accessible hallways and restrooms

  • Adding more mobility devices

  • Including more Braille signage

Take the opportunity to improve inclusion at this St. Louis attraction and make your voice heard — fill out Forest Park Forever’s latest survey with your suggestions now.
