Annie Morrow Featured on the MS Living Well Podcast
Annie Morrow, director of the Stephen A. Orthwein Center, was recently featured in an episode of the MS Living Well Podcast. Annie discussed mobility and multiple sclerosis (MS) with the Director of the MS Center for Innovations in Care at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Dr. Barry Singer.
The podcast provides information directly from medical experts and patient advocates about the latest treatments, innovations, and tips for people who have multiple sclerosis. Annie provided insights on enhancing the ability to walk through adaptive exercise, advanced technology and specialized therapy for individuals with advanced MS. Other topics she covered included alleviating spasticity, building endurance, selecting mobility aids, and finding transportation.
“Since MS can vary greatly from person to person, even with severe disability, our goals should be centered around the individual to meet their needs,” Annie said.
During her portion of the MS podcast, Annie shared that at the Orthwein Center, they often use two pieces of equipment to promote muscle stimulation and decrease spasticity — RT300 Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Cycle and the Galileo Vibration Plate. Beyond that, exercise regimes at the center ultimately aim to preserve muscle function, maintain independence, and foster inclusion.
“Our center is a place where people with disabilities feel a sense of belonging,” Annie said. “It’s a place where they have the ability to achieve goals — they’re not limited by the accessibility of a fitness center. They can come together to share their experiences with one another and find support.”
The Orthwein Center tailors each person's adaptive exercise regime to their function and mobility, personal goals and overall exercise preferences. Learn more about living an active lifestyle by listening to the latest MS Living Well Podcast episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or their website.
