The Benefits of the EksoNR Exoskeleton for Legs

The machines at the Stephen A. Orthwein Center are often used in physical therapy for neurorehabilitation and neural repair. One piece of equipment is the EksoNR — a wearable exoskeleton for legs created by Eksobionics. Through assisted motion, the machine slowly retrains neural pathways and strengthens muscles commonly used for walking and standing.

Read on to learn more about the exoskeleton and how to start building your strength with Paraquad.

Why We Use the EksoNR

The exoskeleton provides support for muscles and joints weakened after an injury. It enables movements that users may not be able to do independently. This can be hugely beneficial for those who have limited to no mobility due to a brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke or multiple sclerosis. The machine puts people back on their feet faster so they may re-learn step patterns, weight shifting and posture.

With consistent use, the EksoNR helps people regain independence. Studies show that using an exoskeleton for legs improves gait, walking speed, balance and endurance. In addition, it may help reduce secondary health complications. Prolonged sitting or laying down puts people at risk of osteoporosis, bone fractures, pressure sores and blood clots. By getting them up and moving, the machine maintains the body’s natural equilibrium.

How It Works

People using the machine for neurorehabilitation and neural repair start by sitting in the exoskeleton. A trained adaptive exercise specialist then helps the user get strapped in from the shoulders down. The adjustable hardware allows the machine to fit users of varying weights and heights quickly and easily.

From there, specialists can adjust more settings to target each session for specific weaknesses. For example, if a person’s left leg is weaker, the EksoNR may place more weight on it to build muscle mass over time and regain as much function as possible. The exoskeleton for legs allows each user to get more and better steps faster than traditional methods.

The beauty of the exoskeleton is its customization. Each workout can be set to your movement targets and modified in real time as needed. The primary features include:

  • Data Capture

  • Posture Support

  • Goal Customization

  • Assisted Gait

  • Adaptive Gait Training

  • Pre-ambulatory Tools

How to Get Started

The exoskeleton is considered one of our specialty pieces of equipment. It’s only available for use during 1:1 exercise training sessions with our adaptive exercise specialists. To start training with the EksoNR, contact the Orthwein Center at (314) 289-4202 or ask a staff member on the gym floor.
