Affordable Care Act Provides Security and Stability for People with Disabilities

Today we celebrate the two year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act.  Many people are skeptical as to what the Affordable Care Act really means for them.  Two years in, and I can tell you how people with disabilities are already benefiting.

No Discrimination Based on Pre-existing Condition

People with disabilities and chronic conditions will be able to find affordable insurance in the market.  Insurance companies won’t be able to deny coverage due to a pre-existing condition or charge a higher premium because you have a disability.

New Report Looks at Disability Worldwide

On June 9th, the World Health Organization and the World Bank released the first-ever World Report on Disability.  Per the report, there are more than one billion people in the world with a disability.  This report helps to give a broader view of the disability experience worldwide.    It identifies barriers, unmet needs, and begins to provide guidance on how communities can move forward.

Do you want more of your money going to healthcare services or insurance companies?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was developed to increase access to healthcare and to reduce ever rising healthcare costs.  One consumer protection included in the ACA is the medical loss ratio (MLR).  Essentially, insurance companies would be required to spend 80%-85% of our insurance premiums on healthcare services.  If they don’t meet the MLR requirement, they are required to send premium rebates to plan members.

2011 Legislative Session Wrap Up

IL Funding:

Reversed proposed cut of $2.3 million to maintain 2011 level of funding for 2012 fiscal year.

CDS/In-Home reimbursement Rate:

A 2% rate increase for fiscal year 2012.

Tribute to Max Starkloff

"The legacy left by Max Starkloff is reflected in the thousands of individuals who today are living fulfilling and independent lives," said Robert Huskey, Paraquad board chair. In paying tribute to Starkloff, Huskey said the organization is continuing Starkloff’s commitment to people with disabilities, providing services annually to more than 4,000 participants in its 22 programs.
